Solid gold versus gold-plated watches

We buy solid gold and gold-cased watches and value them on their gold content via XRF assay and the LBMA spot price. Gold-plated watches contain only a microscopic layer of gold and are not accepted.

It is not uncommon for vintage watches to look like gold but actually be rolled gold, which unfortunately we cannot pay for – you can sometimes see this stamped on the bracelet. If you're not sure, send it in and let us test it using XRF.

Selling gold watches

Solid gold watch cases, usually 9ct or 18ct, are valued on their gold content like any other gold item, once any non-gold parts such as the movement, glass and pins are accounted for.

Though a desirable, working branded watch can be worth more sold whole than melted for its gold, this is less and less likely now the gold price has risen so sharply in the last few years. Watches are rarely worth more than their gold content.

FAQ

Find the answer to your questions and submit your request

Do you accept gold-plated watches?

No. Plated watches have no recoverable gold value. Solid gold and gold-cased watches are valued on their actual gold content.

How is a gold watch valued?

By its gold content: we assay the carat by XRF, weigh the gold parts and apply the LBMA spot price.

What about the movement and stones?

Let us know and we'll remove and return movements or set stones, or make a separate offer where they have value.

Not sure if my watch is solid gold?

Send it in; our XRF assay will confirm whether it's solid gold or plated, and we'll explain the result.
